Directional Movement Index (TradingView built-in) works best on 30m: 89% of settings positive on LINK (fees included)

We ran all 2200 settings of Directional Movement Index (TradingView built-in) on BTC, ETH, SOL, XRP, ADA, BNB, DOGE, HYPE, LINK and SUI across 15m, 30m, 1h and 4h over the past 90 days, with the 0.11% fee per trade included. The clearest pattern was timeframe.

Where it worked best: LINK 30m, where 89% of settings (49 of 55) ended positive after fees.

Why timeframe: fees

Every trade pays 0.11%, so the more often a setting trades, the more the fee takes out of its result. 15m: settings averaged 137 trades, so fees took about 15.1 percentage points, and 28% of the settings that were positive before fees stayed positive after. 30m: settings averaged 69 trades, so fees took about 7.6 percentage points, and 63% of the settings that were positive before fees stayed positive after. 1h: settings averaged 35 trades, so fees took about 3.8 percentage points, and 90% of the settings that were positive before fees stayed positive after. 4h: settings averaged 8.8 trades, so fees took about 1.0 percentage points, and 96% of the settings that were positive before fees stayed positive after.

How the default did

The TradingView default (14 · 14 · 20) on LINK 30m returned +13.64% with 62 trades; 23 of 55 setting combinations under the same conditions did better than the default.

BB (Bollinger Bands) behaved very differently by timeframe. Over the past 90 days, 90% of setting combinations finished positive after fees on 4h, but only 11% did on 15m. We ran all 1,400 setting combinations on 10 coins (BTC, ETH, SOL, XRP, BNB, DOGE, ADA, LINK, SUI and HYPE) across 15m, 30m, 1h and 4h, with a 0.11% fee taken out of every trade. The figures in this post are as of 2026-10-17, and every result is recomputed nightly with fresh data. What does BB actually measure? Bollinger Bands (BB) are a volatility tool developed by John Bollinger. The middle line is a simple moving average of the close, and the upper and lower bands sit a multiple of the standard deviation of the close above and below it.
