CCI Best Settings for 4h: Default vs Top Settings Backtested (Fees Included)

Say you put CCI (Commodity Channel Index) on your chart and traded every signal for the last 90 days. Here is how the default 20 · -100 · 100 did, side by side with every other setting combination under the same conditions. We ran all 1,400 setting combinations on 10 coins (BTC, ETH, SOL, XRP, BNB, DOGE, ADA, LINK, SUI and HYPE) across 15m, 30m, 1h and 4h, with a 0.11% fee taken out of every trade. The figures in this post are as of 2026-10-27, and every result is recomputed nightly with fresh data.

How does CCI work?

The Commodity Channel Index (CCI) was introduced by Donald Lambert to track cycles in commodity markets. It takes the typical price (hlc3, the average of high, low and close), measures how far it sits from its moving average over the same period, and divides that gap by the mean deviation scaled by Lambert's constant. TradingView's default length is 20.

Despite the name, CCI is now used on stocks, forex, crypto and pretty much any market. The scaling is meant to keep most readings between +100 and -100, so values below -100 are read as oversold, stretched well under the average, and values above +100 as overbought. CCI has no upper or lower bound, so it can run far past those levels in a strong trend.

What do the CCI inputs mean?

  • Length (length) — Number of bars for the moving average of the typical price and the mean deviation. Default is 20.
  • Oversold level (os) — Entry line. A buy signal fires when CCI crosses above it from below. Default is -100.
  • Overbought level (ob) — Exit line. The position is closed when CCI crosses below it from above. Default is 100.

TradingView default: 20 · -100 · 100. Backtest rule used here: When a bar closes with CCI crossing up through the oversold line (default -100), a long position is opened at the next bar's open; when a bar closes with CCI crossing down through +100, it is closed at the next bar's open. Long only.

What happens if you keep the default?

Coin by coin on 4h, the default 20 · -100 · 100 topped out on SUI at +46.93%, with 10 coins in the green. On the same 4h, the top setting combination reached +55.47%, versus a default average of +18.73% — a 36.7-point gap that shows how wide the range of outcomes is.

From 15m to 4h — where did the difference come from?

TimeframeDefault avg. returnPositive settingsAvg. trades

30m-6.04%43%81
1h+3.32%79%39
4h+18.73%87%9

The shorter the timeframe, the more trades — and the more the 0.11% fee per trade ate into results. 4h had the highest positive share at 87%. 15m averaged 163 trades, so fees alone took about 17.9 points; 4h averaged 9 trades and about 1.0 points.

How far did the top settings go?

The three strongest results on 4h.

One high result on its own can be a short lucky streak. The indicator analysis page shows whether nearby setting combinations held up too.

What to keep in mind when reading the numbers

This is one 90-day window. A low win rate can still come with a positive return, and a large MDD means a deep drawdown had to be sat through along the way. Return, MDD and trade count are best read together.

CCI FAQ

Does it buy the moment CCI drops below -100?

No. This backtest treats the move back up through the oversold line as the entry. While CCI is still falling it waits, and once a closed bar confirms the upward cross, it buys at the next bar's open.

What if CCI never reaches +100?

The only exit is CCI crossing down through +100 after being above it. If CCI turns lower before reaching that line, the position stays open until the exit condition is eventually met.

Are the values the same as TradingView's CCI?

Yes. Like the built-in CCI on TradingView, it uses the typical price (hlc3), a simple moving average and the mean deviation, so the same chart and length give the same values.

In short

In this data, CCI had its highest positive share on 4h at 87%, and the TradingView default (20 · -100 · 100) was positive on 10 of 10 coins. On the same 4h, the gap between the top setting combination and the default average was 36.7 points.
